THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL ON OPENING AND MAINTAINING A CHECKING ACCOUNT IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AIMED AT INCREASING WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD RECOGNIZE THAT A CHECKING ACCOUNT IS A SAFE WAY TO HANDLE MONEY. HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY STEPS FOR OPENING A CHECKING ACCOUNT, TO DISCERN AMONG DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHECKING ACCOUNTS, TO WRITE AND ENDORSE CHECKS CORRECTLY, TO RECONCILE THE ACCOUNT EACH MONTH, AND TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO NOTIFY THE BANK IMMEDIATELY IF A CHECKBOOK OR SINGLE CHECK IS LOST. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, A UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS FOR OPENING AND MAINTAINING AN ACCOUNT, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT-TEST KEY, WORD LIST, AND BLANK SPACE FOR TEACHER'S NOTES. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979 AND WAS FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT. THE PROGRAM, TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILE AND OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-63917 AND 63919-63925. (CFW)
