Abstract

Through-the-wall sensor (TTWS) technology provides police department's with the ability to detect motion through building walls. The primary purpose of this technology is to provide "public safety professionals with increased situational awareness in tactical and rescue situations." This article in the summer 2013 issue of TechBeat discusses evaluation efforts to verify TTWS technology capabilities. The verification efforts are being implemented by the Sensor, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence (SSBT CoE). The SSBT CoE has implemented several projects to study TTWS technology and determine the best practices for the technology. The article also discusses the efforts of AKELA, Inc., to develop an affordable prototype device for use by local law enforcement agencies. In mid-2012 the company delivered a prototype to the SSBT CoE to evaluate its capabilities. A report on these evaluation efforts is intended for publication on JUSTNET in 2013.
