Feature articles in this issue report on Pennsylvania's modeling of a "streamlined" approach to inmate management; the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security's efforts to provide information on how law enforcement agencies, schools, and venue management can use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS); and the Forensic Technology Center of Excellence's (FTCoE's) new approach to informing stakeholders.
"Pennsylvania Models a Streamlined Approach to Inmate Management" describes the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' means of improving its assignment of inmates among its 25 correctional facilities. It developed the Inmate Assignment Decision Support System (IADSS), a system that has reduced a task that took 40 labor hours each week to an automated function that takes minutes. It has saved the department nearly $3 million in its first year of use. "National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) Offers UAS-Related Resources" explains the raionale for and the general content of an NCS4 2-day UAV Innovation and Technology Forum on May 15-16. 2018. The forum provided information on laws and regulations that govern the use and control of UAVs, as well as how law enforcement agencies, schools, and venue management can make use of UAS capabilities. "FTCoE Takes New Approach to Informing Stakeholders" describes the many ways in which the FTCoE promotes educational materials related to forensic pathology and medico-legal death investigations (MDIs). The promotion of these materials includes webinars, podcasts, conference reports, links to articles, and workshop presentations. There is also a new topical focus for a redesigned website. All of these media address themes that are timely. Although forensic pathology and MDI are the first topics to benefit from this new approach, the FTFoE has plans to emphasize at least six more topics during 2019. The usual Techbeat section on "Public Safety Technology in the News" is also provided.
