Abstract
Based on the results from a two-part survey conducted of the administrators of the State criminal history record repositories in January through July of 2002, by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 53 jurisdictions were surveyed which included the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. All 53 jurisdictions responded. Major survey findings were reported in the areas of the level of automation of master name indexes and criminal history files, level of disposition reporting, level of felony flagging, and timeliness of trial court disposition data. Detailed survey findings were reported in the areas of status of State criminal history files, completeness of data in State criminal history repository, disposition data, correctional data, timeliness of data in State criminal history repository, admission to correctional facilities, procedures to improve data quality, linking of arrests and dispositions, other data quality procedures, and audits. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was the source for information relating to the number of criminal history records of the States participating in the Interstate Identification Index system that are maintained by the State criminal history repositories and the number of records maintained by the FBI for the States, as of March 2003.
