This manual discusses how to assess an individual school gang problem and plan intervention.
Abstract
Guidelines for the control and reduction of the school gang problem include assessment, goal setting, objectives, strategies, implementation, and evaluation. The proposed school antigang program is built around five strategies: social opportunities, social support, suppression, community mobilization, and organizational development and change. Objectives of a special school program must be the creation of a structure for flexible curriculum and the ensuring of a safe school environment; application of consistent sanctions and means to protect students and the surrounding community from gangs; appropriate training, staff selection, data retrieval systems, and evaluation; early intervention to prevent and deter gang involvement; vocational education, job preparation, and employment experiences; parental involvement; and liaison, coordination, and outreach to community agencies and programs. The manual details organizational requirements, components of a training program, and program characteristics appropriate for schools with differing grade levels. Program evaluation design and implementation are also discussed. Appended glossary, 2 tables, and a 33-item bibliography
