Abstract
The first article, Tribal Youth: Champions of Change in Indian Country, discusses the 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit held from July 28 - August 2, 2012, in Chevy Chase, MD. The second article, Supreme Court Bans Mandatory Life Without Parole for Juveniles Convicted of Homicide, discusses the June 25, 2012 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on State laws that mandate sentences of life without possibility of parole for juvenile offenders convicted of homicide. The third article, Defending Childhood Task Force Briefs Congress on Children's Exposure to Violence, discusses testimony by the Task Force co-chairs before Members of Congress. The fourth article, OJJDP Announces $1.5 Million Grant to Reduce Youth Violence in Detroit, discusses the grant awarded to the city of Detroit to expand its efforts to reduce violence among youth. The fifth article, Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Hold Third Annual Summit in Washington, DC, discusses the summit on bullying prevention held in August, 2012, by leaders from nonprofits, corporate organizations, and Federal agencies. The sixth article, Mentoring: OJJDP Reaches Out to Children With Deployed Parents, discusses efforts by local organizations across the country that have received funds from OJJDP to provide services to children from military families. Additional sections of the newsletter include a listing of upcoming events, a list of brief news items, and brief descriptions of new publications.
