In providing information for use in proceedings for the National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month (January 2019) , the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) reports data and information on the prevalence and harms of human trafficking and ways in which BJA and the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) have facilitated the work of the Enhanced Collaborative Model (ECM) Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking program since 2015.
Abstract
At the time of this report, federal data show that $99 billion per year was made from sex trafficking, and 4.5 million individuals were victims of forced sexual exploitation. Also, $51 billion per year was made from the use of forced labor, involving 21 million individuals. Since 2015, the ECM Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking has developed effective and sustainable multidisciplinary task forces, served the individual needs of trafficking victims, and investigated and prosecuted sex and labor trafficking cases, as well as the purchasers of commercial sex. Each task force is composed of several partners, including law enforcement and a victim services agency. Data are provided on the active BJA-funded human trafficking task force grantees, human trafficking investigations, minors confirmed as victims of human trafficking, individuals arrested for offenses related to human trafficking, and the number of traffickers found guilty of human trafficking charges.
