Abstract
Initiated in 1995 and administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is an umbrella program encompassing evolving efforts to support State activities relating to the establishment of records systems and the collection and use of criminal history and related records. This program announcement allows agencies to apply for grants from the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP)-2000 appropriation of $45 million. Program priorities for the NCHIP-2000 include: 1) commitment to establishing the infrastructure to support full implementation of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS); 2) commitment to support court efforts relating to development of record systems; 3) Protection order files and records of domestic violence; and 4) Enhanced access to criminal records for noncriminal justice purposes, including implementation of the National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact. The goal of the NCHIP award program is to improve the Nation's public safety by enhancing the quality, completeness and accessibility of the Nation's criminal history and sex offender record systems.
