Annotation

This report presents the findings, methodology, and recommendations from the process evaluation of the Rocky Boy's Children Exposed to Violence Project (RBCEVP) of the Chippewa Cree Tribe at its Montana reservation, one of eight sites receiving grants under the U.S. Attorney General's Defending Childhood Demonstration Project, a grant program that promotes the prevention of and services for children exposed to violence.

Abstract

Despite some staff turnover and other challenges, the RBCEVP mounted a comprehensive program for preventing and delivering services to reservation children exposed to violence. Coordinated by the Chippewa Cree Division of Human Services, RBCEVP has built a strong advocacy and case-management program for children exposed to violence. This is informed by a commitment to a traditional culture that reconnects youth and their families with the Chippewa Cree language, culture, and traditions that give priority to the family as the protector and nurturer of children. The RBCEVP has provided prevention programming and support services to children and youth, ensured access to specialized training for local service providers in how to treat trauma in children exposed to violence, and conducted a campaign to increase community awareness of the nature, trauma, and treatment of a child's exposure to violence.
