In this podcast, part of the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program (or “COAP”) podcast series, Dr. Ashley Batastini highlights how to identify and overcome barriers when considering implementing the delivery of behavioral health disorders treatment through videoconferencing in correctional settings. The use of videoconferencing to provide behavioral health services in health care and justice settings is increasing as a way of expanding and enhancing service delivery, especially for hard-to-reach populations. There are barriers associated with implementing videoconferencing in all settings, but correctional institutions face specific concerns. For example, buy-in regarding this new way of delivering services (videoconferencing) needs to be secured from patients, physicians, administrators, and both corrections and behavioral health staff. Dr. Batastini will briefly discuss recommendations for securing buy-in, its importance, and where to start, as well as other barriers and recommendations for overcoming those barriers, based on her experience and research. After listening to this podcast, participants will be able to identify three barriers regarding implementing videoconferencing in corrections settings; demonstrate an understanding of three strategies to address barriers; and identify how to increase buy-in and where to start/focus engagement strategies.
