This is the report of a meeting that launched the Justice Department's National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) collaboration in developing a strategic plan to assess what has been learned and what is missing regarding its portfolio on Children Exposed to Violence (CEV).
Abstract
The meeting's first day involved a segment entitled, "Setting the Stage: The Role of Research in CEV." It contained presentations and discussions of the Defending Childhood Initiative, the Department of Justice and partner efforts related to CEV, and NIJ's program of research on children exposed to violence. The meeting's second segment involved a discussion of research findings from NIJ's FY12, FY13, and FY14 studies. Topics addressed were long-term impacts of early child abuse and electronic harassment. The meeting's second day consisted of presentations on poly-victimization among at-risk populations. The presentations addressed familial pathways to poly-victimization for sexual minority youth, poly-victimization screening in the juvenile justice system, and factors promoting risk or resilience among poly-victimized youth in the juvenile justice system. A discussion of research plans for NIJ's FY15 studies addressed poly-victimization resilience portfolios for advancing the science of resilience; child exposure to intimate partner violence and parent aggression in two generations; presentation of evaluations of Program Office projects; and a discussion and analysis of NIJ's CEV research program. A list of participants is provided.
