BJS Releases School Resource Officers, 2019–2020
The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, today released School Resource Officers, 2019–2020. This report presents data on school resource officers, which are sworn law enforcement officers assigned to work in any public K–12 school.
The report provides details on demographics and certification of school resource officers by the type of law enforcement agency that employs them. It also describes law enforcement, mentoring, and teaching activities performed by the officers. The report discusses equipment typically carried and training received by the officers.
“This report represents the results of the first-ever BJS survey of sworn officers. When BJS surveyed school resource officers, 69% reported that they had responded to an incident in a classroom within the past 30 days,” said Kevin M. Scott, PhD, acting director of BJS.
