Currently, medication assisted treatment (MAT) is the primary, evidence-based approach to helping individuals with opioid use disorder recover from dependency.

Federal and state governments have invested millions of dollars in developing the infrastructure to provide MAT, and these treatments have become more widely available than ever before.

However, the use of MAT in child welfare settings is fraught with challenges.

This presentation will discuss the challenges child welfare systems face in incorporating MAT to address parental opioid use disorder.

The findings are based on a multi-site qualitative study, to 11 communities across the US. The presenters will draw on input from over 180 interviews with child welfare administrators and practitioners, substance abuse treatment centers, courts, law enforcement, and public health officials.
