BJS Releases Jail Inmates in 2024 – Statistical Tables
The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, released Jail Inmates in 2024 – Statistical Tables today. This web report provides statistics on jail inmates, based on BJS’s Annual Survey of Jails and Census of Jails.
It is the 38th in a series that began in 1982 and describes the number of persons held in local jails, inmate demographics, jail incarceration rates, conviction status and offense characteristics, the number of admissions to jail, persons supervised outside of jail, jail capacity, and staff employed in local jails. Findings in this report are based on the 2014–2018 and 2020–2023 Annual Survey of Jails and the 2019 and 2024 Census of Jails. The report updates Preliminary Data Release – Jails (2024) published in December 2025.
