In the second of a series of articles on batteries used by police, this paper focuses on how to determine battery life and compare different types of batteries.
Abstract
Each manufacturer selects its own rating system, making it difficult to compare different brands and types of batteries. Batteries are becoming smaller and smaller; the limiting factor of a device is the size of the battery that powers it. The amp hour rating for a battery indicates how much current a battery can supply for a given period of time. A higher amp hour rating means that the battery will last longer, assuming that it is doing the same amount of work. The amp hour ratings also depend on when the battery is considered to be dead: the point below which the battery will be permanently damaged if continues to be drained. Each type of battery has its own definition of dead. A battery rating also specifies the temperature at which the ratings were determined.
