The Youth Management Assessment was designed to capture a wide range of violent antisocial behaviors committed by adolescents and to assess the threat imposed by young offenders at risk of serious reoffending.
Abstract
The instrument was specifically developed to perform the following functions: provide a standardized overall perspective on youthful offenders; reduce the risk of potential harm to staff and other offenders in residences and institutions; provide a standardized language for communicating about young offenders; assist staff in preparing young offender predisposition reports; provide security, management, and treatment direction for young offenders at risk of serious self-injury; and monitor the progress of young offenders during the course of their sentences. The instrument was administered by probation and parole officers to 202 young offenders in Canada, in conjunction with the preparation of predisposition reports, and to 157 young offenders in open custody settings. Preliminary findings suggested that the Youth Management Assessment provides a reasonable means of evaluating young offenders at risk of committing serious personal injury offenses while in custody or in the community. Risk factors associated with reoffending and the importance of young offender case management are discussed. 8 references, 2 tables, and 2 figures
