This report presents findings from a feasibility pilot study documenting the range and quality of youth justice information collected electronically by New Zealand police and the Department of Child, Youth and Family and assessing the degree to which the data between the agencies could be integrated to attain a minimum youth justice dataset.
Abstract
Due to a lack of good quality information on the offending and re-offending rates of young people in New Zealand, the Ministry of Justice was tasked with developing a minimum youth justice dataset. This dataset would be consistent and contain comprehensive information about offending and re-offending by children and youth to support effective intervention, policy, and practice. A pilot study was conducted to document the range of youth justice information collected electronically by police and child, youth, and family (CYF). The study found that there is certainly potential for a Youth Justice Minimum Dataset (YJMD) to be established in the justice sector to serve as a source of good quality information on the youth justice system, and in particular on offending and re-offending rates of young people. A number of issues are identified and discussed that impact on the structure and contents of an YJMD that could be developed in the short to medium term. Appendix 1-3
