This document, a report of the Urban Institute's Program on Youth Justice prepared on behalf of the The Joyce Foundation, presents information on trends in juvenile justice policy.
Abstract
This report was prepared by the Urban Institute's Program on Youth Justice. The program's research including the research for this article includes studying all youth (juveniles through age 24), considering individual, family, community, and organization outcomes, reviewing data and the impact of prevention programs, traditional criminal justice system offerings, community service offerings, and using an interdisciplinary approach to analysis. Recent trends in youth gun violence are identified and explored. Trends in juvenile justice agencies including modeling of juvenile justice systems on adult correctional systems are discussed. Crime statistics, intervention programs, and firearm tracing programs are presented. The authors conclude that the next step in the analytic process is examination of the impact recent law and policy changes have had on the juvenile justice system. 12 graphs, 10 tables, 42 references, glossary
