This manual provides step-by-step instructions for establishing and operating a youth group focusing on crime prevention and describes successful projects and strategies in the United Kingdom.
Abstract
The guidelines are intended for youth interested in becoming involved in youth crime prevention, existing groups, and police officers and other adults who support the work of the youth groups. England, Scotland, and Wales have more than 275 of these groups. The steps involved in initiating a group are to obtain support from an adviser, a police officer, and the administrator of the organization in which the group is being established; to involve other youth; and to organize an open meeting. The group should also develop action plans based on issues of concern, evaluate achievements, publicize its work, and celebrate its success. Possible activities for new panels include "adopting" specific telephone booths and making sure they stay in good working order, conducting a property identification project, and improving bicycle security. More experienced panels can undertake projects to prevent vandalism, shoplifting, drug abuse, bullying, driving under the influence, and racial discrimination.
