This booklet, which is part of the McGruff "Take A Bite Out Of Crime" series, instructs readers in how to protect themselves, their families, their neighborhoods, and their workplaces from crime.
Abstract
A review of the history of the McGruff crime-prevention campaign is followed by a definition of "crime prevention" as "reducing the chances for criminals to victimize you, your family, and neighbors." The booklet then presents a listing of actions the reader can take to reduce the chances of being a victim of "street crime." This is followed by a listing of measures for safeguarding one's home. Suggestions are offered for the use of locks, lights, and cooperation with neighbors. The booklet advises that concerned neighbors who watch out for one another constitute the front-line defense against neighborhood crime. Ways of cultivating such a neighborhood are suggested. Various types of neighborhood crime prevention programs are described, including neighborhood block watch groups. Suggestions are then listed for making one's workplace safe. Next, the booklet offers crime-prevention recommendations that focus on particular groups and crimes. The groups targeted for recommendations are children, teens, and senior citizens. The offenses targeted are underage drinking, drug abuse, sexual assault, fraud, identity theft, and computer-related crime.
