Annotation

The five fold increase in crime rates in the Republic of Ireland in 1960-1985, lower than the eight fold increase in Northern Ireland, is discussed with emphasis on juvenile offenders.

Abstract

The Irish Republic's juvenile justice system consisting of the Garda Siochana (Guardians of the Peace), courts, probation and welfare service, residential and custodial settings, and community services is discussed with reference to comparable elements in Northern Ireland's system. Reform issues are reviewed, and it is noted that the Children Act 1908 remains the legal basis for the current juvenile justice system. 14 references.
