Factors affecting chemical dependency in young people and related treatment issues are explored.
Abstract
The treatment of chemical dependency is complicated by emotional and developmental characteristics of youth. Effective treatment must improve the quality of young people's interaction with the environment. Factors shaping this interaction include family dynamics, sociological and psychological determinants, legal and judicial polices, peer relationships, educational and school policy issues, special needs such as physical or emotional impairment, physical health, religious beliefs and spiritual needs, and financial resource. The treatment of chemical dependency is further complicated because professionals do not always agree on the nature of the illness and appropriate treatment options. Issues being debated encompass assessment guidelines, length of stay in treatment or aftercare, and training requirements for health care providers. Additionally, external regulating forces such as licensing, staff credential guidelines, and operating policies and procedures are inconsistent among treatment facilities. Genetic, family, social, and sexual issues in chemical dependency are described. Basic chemical dependency treatment components are examined, along with the use of reality therapy, guidelines for working with families, and post-treatment issues. A glossary of terms is included. 22 references.
