ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY THE NATIONAL VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE ASSOCIATION URGES MEMBERS TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES, PROGRAMS, AND INTERVENTIONS TO HELP PERSONS PLAN REALISTICALLY AND CREATIVELY FOR THEIR CAREERS.
Abstract
THIS PREFACE TO A SPECIAL 60TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE OF THE ORGANIZATION'S PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINE STATES THAT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE CONTROL OF THEIR LIVES AND THEIR CAREERS IS LIMITED. MOST PEOPLE HAVE NOT HAD THE SOCIOECONOMIC ADVANTAGES, THE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, AND THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO ALLOW THEM TO FEEL A SENSE OF CONTROL, TO PLAN, AND TO BECOME VOCATIONALLY MATURE. MINORITY GROUP MEMBERS FIND OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN SO LIMITED THAT, EVEN WHEN OPTIONS DEVELOP, THEY HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO FAIL, TO THINK SMALL, AND TO UNDERVALUE THEMSELVES. WOMEN LEARN BY SECOND GRADE THAT CERTAIN OCCUPATIONS ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR GIRLS, BUT THAT MORE OCCUPATIONS AND MORE PRESTIGIOUS OCCUPATIONS ARE APPROPRIATE ONLY FOR BOYS. OTHER 'HAVE NOTS,' THUS DEFINED, ARE OLDER PERSONS WHO ARE EMOTIONALLY DEVALUED AND CUT OFF FROM ECONOMIC PRODUCTIVITY. THE SPECIAL ISSUE FOCUSES ON THE FUTURE AND POINTS OUT NEW DIRECTIONS FOR VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE. THE PHRASE, 'THE PAST IS PROLOGUE,' IS IDIOMATICALLY TRANSLATED AS 'YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET.' (GLR)
