This manual contains step-by-step information about planning workshops on jail library services for administrators, librarians, and other interested groups and presents outlines for four different workshops.
Abstract
The guide identifies individuals or groups that should be involved in planning a workshop and delineates their responsibilities: workshop coordinator, sponsors, and a planning committee of five to seven members. It strongly recommends joint planning by administrators and librarians . Other suggestions include developing a planning timeframe, selecting participant groups, assessing participants' information needs, choosing an appropriate workshop topic, and designing the workshop. The guide also considers logistics, including facility selection, publicity, and budgeting. The first two workshops outlined, 'Books Behind Bars' and 'Establishing a Jail Library Service,' provide less-experienced trainers with enough information to use with few modifications. Sample publicity materials, agendas, suggested procedures, and handouts are included. The manual also outlines a workshop on specialized services and a regional conference on improving jail library services. All workshops incorporate learning techniques that involve participants, such as role-playing simulations. Appendixes list information sources for jail libraries and nonprint materials on jails and provide materials for playing the Jail Library Game, which was demonstrated at the 1978 American Library Association conference.
