A blueprint for achieving legally sound and effective workplace drug testing programs is presented that focuses on why employers need to prevent drug abuse.
Abstract
During the past decade, drug testing in the workplace has gone from ground zero to fairly universal acceptance in the business community. In 1983, only 3 percent of employers in the largest 200 U.S. corporations tested one or more job applicant classes; by 1991, this figure rose to 98 percent. Employers have enthusiastically embraced the mission of drug abuse testing and prevention because of the high costs of drug abuse to the business community. The blueprint for drug testing programs deals with the basis for drug testing, employee perspectives on drug testing, job applicant drug testing, drug testing options, drug types, drug testing methodologies and procedures, and the importance of confidentiality. An initial steps drug testing checklist and answers to employee questions about drug testing are provided. Tables and figures
