The bulletin is a programmed learning test designed to teach jail managers about media relations and how to work with the media to maintain a good public image for the jail.
Abstract
The bulletin provides nine rules for working with the news media for jail managers. The topics covered include: defining news, reporters' access to jail information, public information policies, helping reporters, and the duties of the public information officer. The text recommends a written public information policy that sets guidelines for contact with the media; emergency response plans should include procedures for dealing with the media during a crisis. The policy should also describe how jail personnel can help reporters cover the jail fairly and accurately. The three ways that a public information officer can help improve a jail's public image are discussed, and there is a description of the kinds of jail events that are of interest to the media and the public.
