Integration of females in correctional staff was studied using experiences and perceptions of officers and inmates in this 1985 study of a Canadian pre-trial centre for men.
Abstract
Perceived drawbacks to employing females in correctional officer positions such as privacy rights of inmates, physical abilities of female staff, and organizational or co-worker attitudes are discussed. The dimensions studied were interactive abilities, physical abilities, protective attitudes, acceptance of female officers and inmate privacy concerns. It was found that female officers had a calming effect on the prison environment due to their communication skills. A protective attitude was found both among inmates and male staff with the physical abilities of females a concern of male officers. Both male and female officers were sensitive to career advancement in the integrated environment. Study results were consistent with results from similar studies in other countries. Further research should include observational data and record inspection for alternative perspectives. 25 references.
