Abstract
Four chapters review and discuss literature relevant to male sexual victimization in the areas of reporting, interviewing, therapy, and validation. The discussion of reporting addresses incidence rates, under-reporting by boy victims, and differences in patterns of abuse. The chapter on interviewing considers the establishment of rapport, tactics for eliciting information, the use of anatomical dolls and drawings, and fact-finding in the interview. A model for writing the interview summary and case assessment encompasses referral information, the interview with the family or care-giver, a review of the interview setting, a summary of interview findings, concerns raised by the interview, and impressions and recommendations. The chapter on treatment covers identification of the need for counseling support to the child and his family, an annotated listing of common treatment issues and goals, sexual issues, the victim's identification with the abuser, denial and guilt, and therapeutic frameworks for intervention. A chapter relies upon the work of Suzanne Sgroi as a perspective for examining the case histories of boy victims. Two other chapters reflect the author's experience with the assessment and case management of over 200 young, male victims referred to a multidisciplinary child protection team. 35 references and appended discussions of traumagenic dynamics in the impact of sexual abuse and a taxonomy of child molesters
