This pamphlet examines the dynamics of domestic abuse and its effects on children and provides strategies for intervention with children from violent homes.
Abstract
In addition to the damage the domestic assault does to the adults involved, it also greatly affects the children. Children from violent homes suffer psychological effects that may include depression, behavior problems, sleep or eating disorders, and developmental slowness. In addition, such children may themselves have been subjected to physical or sexual abuse. These children need someone to whom they can talk about their feelings and what is happening in their homes. In working with these children, it is important to be open and honest, notice tangibles, provide opportunities for expressing feelings, and provide models for having fun. Intervention also should focus on building self-esteem and teaching safety measures. Intervention strategies may include use of books and games, art projects, guided fantasy, and open-ended storytelling. Special techniques may be required for the aggressive, the silent, and the ethnic child. Included are 38 suggested readings and a listing of State and national resources.
