This article presents a survey of work-release programs in various State systems.
Abstract
It reports that 45 States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons have work release from special facilities, while 13 States allow work release from secure facilities. Kentucky, Mississippi, Oregon, and Texas do not have inmate work-release programs. Charts are provided with information about number of participants, type of facility released from, and criteria for work-release participation including proportion of sentence served, release, date, type of offense, and disciplinary record in 30 systems. An additional chart provides information on job-finding assistance, transportation to work sites, rent payment, and success and failures with the program. Overall the States agree on the success of the work release program as evidenced in lower recidivism rates and reduction of prison overcrowding.
