English and American common law relating to women's rights is discussed along with State employment statutes and Federal statutes prohibiting sex discrimination.
Abstract
The unequal status of American women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is examined with emphasis on the unequal treatment of women in criminal law, property ownership and control, and professional and employment opportunities. Examples of twentieth century discrimination are also cited, along with the effects of statutes prohibiting discrimination. The author's personal experiences with employment discrimination as a young lawyer are also detailed as are ways in which women lawyers can serve as role models and advocates for equitable treatment of women and their interests. 20 footnotes.
