These 12 papers examine the nature and effectiveness of the actions that criminal justice and social service agencies in the public and private sectors are taking to help battered women and to prevent and stop the abuse of women.
Abstract
Chapters on criminal justice responses cover the activities of police, prosecutors, and courts as well as the use of protection orders. Other papers examine the effectiveness of shelters, victim advocacy, and counseling programs for battered women and programs such as diversion, probation, and therapy for abusers. Another chapter analyzes the relationship between child abuse and battering, discusses what can be done to prevent abused children from becoming violent adults, and suggests ways to use research on domestic assault in policymaking.
