TABLES AND A BRIEF DISCUSSION PRESENT INFORMATION CONERNING RESIDENTS IN WISCONSIN'S ADULT AND YOUTHFUL OFFENDER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ON JUNE 30, 1977, WITH 5-YEAR TRENDS FOR 1973-77.
Abstract
OVERALL, THE NUMBERS OF RESIDENTS IN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS APPEAR TO BE LEVELING OFF. THE PROPORTION OF RESIDENTS INSTITUTIONALIZED FOR LESS THAN 1 YEAR HAS DECLINED TO 40.6 PERCENT, WHEREAS LENGTH OF TIME IN PRISON HAS SHIFTED UPWARD FOR BOTH ADULT AND MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS. THE PERCENTAGE OF MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS WHO ENTERED AS NEW ADMISSIONS HAS INCREASED STEADILY OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS AS HAS THE PROPORTION OF NONWHITES AND VIOLENT OFFENDERS. MEDIAN AGE OF MALE RESIDENTS IS 25.4 YEARS AND OF FEMALES 26.5 YEARS, THE HIGHEST IN 5 YEARS. OF THE 68 MALE RESIDENTS IN YOUTHFUL OFFENDER FACILITIES ON JUNE 30, 1977, MOST WERE WHITE AND COMMITTED FOR BURGLARY, WITH THE MEDIAN SENTENCE JUST UNDER 3 YEARS. NO FEMALE OFFENDERS HAD BEEN COMMITTED TO YOUTHFUL OFFENDER INSTITUTIONS BY JUNE 30, 1977. EXTENSIVE TABLES CONTAINS DATA ON TIME INSTITUTIONALIZED FOR MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS (3,120 MALES AND 149 FEMALES SURVEYED), SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF ADULT MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS BY INSTITUTION (TYPE OF COMMITMENT, OFFENSE, ADMISSION STATUS, AGE, RACE, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, ETC.), AND CHARACTERISTICS OF MALE RESIDENTS IN YOUTHFUL OFFENDER INSTITUTIONS.
