TABLES PRESENT DATA ON JUVENILES ADMITTED TO STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN WISCONSIN IN 1978.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 1,278 JUVENILE MALES AND 184 JUVENILE FEMALES WERE ADMITTED TO WISCONSIN STATE JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN 1978, COMPARED TO 1,159 MALES AND 183 FEMALES ADMITTED IN 1977. NEARLY ONE-HALF OF THE 1978 ADMISSIONS CAME FROM THE SIX COUNTIES WHICH MAKE UP THE MILWAUKEE AND SOUTHEASTERN REGIONS. THE NORTHERN REGION ACCOUNTED FOR ONLY 14.2 PERCENT OF ALL ADMISSIONS BUT FOR THE HIGHEST PROPORTION OF FEMALE ADMISSIONS. MEDIAN AGE OF ALL JUVENILE MALES ADMITTED IN 1978 WAS 16.4 YEARS, COMPARED TO 16.3 YEARS IN 1977. THE MEDIAN AGE OF FEMALES DECLINED TO 16.1 YEARS FROM 16.4 YEARS IN 1977. ABOUT THREE-FOURTHS OF THE JUVENILES WERE WHITE. OF THE REST, 18.2 PERCENT OF THE MALES AND 19 PERCENT OF THE FEMALES WERE BLACK, WHILE 5.9 PERCENT OF THE MALES AND 6.5 PERCENT OF FEMALES WERE NATIVE AMERICANS. MORE THAN THREE-FOURTHS OF THE NEWLY ADMITTED MALES HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A BURGLARY OR THEFT. MORE THAN ONE-THIRD OF THE NEWLY ADMITTED FEMALES HAD ALSO BEEN INVOLVED IN SOME KIND OF THEFT. DETAILED DATA ARE PROVIDED IN 18 TABLES AND FURTHER DATA IS SHOWN IN 5 APPENDED TABLES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--PRG)
