This article describes the technology and use of Internet protocol (IP) video surveillance systems.
Abstract
IP video surveillance systems, when combined with growing wireless mesh networking areas, offer an agile, intelligent surveillance system that is operated remotely with computer software equipment. Since 2001, technology has evolved to meet new public safety needs. IP video surveillance systems have replaced analog surveillance systems to meet these new demands. Once IP video was merged with wireless mesh networks, officers were able to rapidly deploy remotely controlled eyes and ears to just about anywhere. One of the key benefits of this technology is that it is intelligent; it is programmable to certain predefined conditions and can thus alert law enforcement when something is amiss. This intelligence function relieves the need for personnel to constantly monitor hours and hours of video feed. The article also discusses some of the many applications of this agile IP video surveillance system, including as a part of a larger crowd-control strategy for large public events or to monitor high crime areas or hard-to-monitor locations. IP video surveillance systems can also be deployed by SWAT teams to quickly secure buildings and maintain visual contact without entering crossfire range.
