THE WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., POLICE DEPARTMENT'S SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT EFFORT AGAINST ROBBERY, BURGLARY, AND AUTO THEFT IS DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
THE WINSTON-SALEM DEPARTMENT SELECTED AND TRAINED 10 OFFICERS TO SERVE ON A SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT UNIT DURING 1975. THE UNIT ACHIEVED ALL THREE OF ITS CLEARANCE RATE GOALS, INCREASING CLEARANCE RATES FOR ROBBERY FROM 25.1 PERCENT IN 1973 TO 43.5 PERCENT IN 1975, FOR BURGLARY FROM 14.7 TO 27.5 PERCENT, AND FOR AUTO THEFT FROM 31.3 TO 36.3 PERCENT. THE INCIDENCE OF ARMED ROBBERY WAS REDUCED BY 21.8 PERCENT. THE UNIT DID NOT ACHIEVE ITS INCIDENCE REDUCTION OBJECTIVES FOR BURGLARY OR AUTO THEFT. THE OBJECTIVE FOR BURGLARY WAS 20 PERCENT; THE REDUCTION ACHIEVED WAS 5.2 PERCENT. THERE WAS A 2.1-PERCENT INCREASE IN THE INCIDENCE OF AUTO THEFT. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE UNIT'S IMPACT ARE NOTED. SUPPORTING DATA ARE PROVIDED. (LKM)
