A random sample of 10 percent of the adult male offenders on bail, probation, and provincial parole in British Columbia was surveyed to determine the prevalence of wife abuse.
Abstract
Results revealed that spouse abuse was common: about one- fifth of the 256 men had a known history of domestic assault, either current or during their lifetimes. More than 17 percent of the offenders had current charges or convictions for wife assault. Findings support the view that wife assault is an important policy issue for provincial corrections agencies in Canada. Possible strategies for addressing this problem include public education, counseling for abusive spouses, victim services, and correctional personnel training.
