SOCIOPSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE CHANGE IN FRENCH PUBLIC ATTITUDES FROM A DESIRE TO UNDERSTAND AND REHABILITATE THE OFFENDER TO DEMANDS FOR 'JUSTICE' IN THE FORM OF EXEMPLARY PUNISHMENT.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR ANALYZES THE SENTIMENTS THAT LIE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS VARIATION AND SUGGESTS THAT AN INHERENT SENSE OF GUILT AND THE INSTINCT OF SELF-PRESERVATION SEEM TO RESULT IN THIS CHANGED AND CHANGEABLE CONCEPT OF JUSTICE. IN A NATIONAL CONTEXT, THIS APPROACH ALLOWS MANIPULATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY BY LEADING NATIONAL FIGURES. BY EXAGGERATING OR HARPING UPON THE THREAT OF AND DANGERS FROM CRIME, THEY CAN CAUSE THE AGGREGATE INSTINCTS OF SELF-PRESERVATION TO PREVAIL, MAKING A POLICY OF REPRESSION NOT ONLY ACCEPTABLE, BUT SOUGHT. --IN FRENCH
