THE AUTHOR CLAIMS THAT THE POLICE TENDENCY TO SUPPORT RADICAL RIGHT-WING OR CONSERVATIVE POLITICS IS A RESULT NUMBER OF ELEMENTS IN THEIR OCCUPATIONAL ROLE AND SOCIAL BACKGROUND.
Abstract
SOME OF THE FACTORS CITED INCLUDE THE ETHNIC INTOLERANCE ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR LOWER MIDDLE CLASS OR WORKING CLASS ORIGINS, POLICE JOB EXPERIENCES IN THE URBAN GHETTO, THE POLICEMAN'S SENSE OF BEING A LOW-STATUS OUTGROUP OF AMERICAN SOCIETY, AND THE TENDENCY FOR LIBERALS AND LEFTISTS TO BE CONCERNED WITH UPHOLDING THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF DEFENDANTS AND WITH WEAKENING THE DISCRETIONARY POWER OF THE POLICE.
