DISCUSSES THE FRUSTRATIONS AND AMBIGUITIES OF THE JOB UNDER COURT RULINGS, REFORM EXPECTATIONS, PRISONER RIGHTS AND COMMUNITY PRESSURES AND URGES DEDICATION AND VISION ON THE EDGE OF DESPAIR.
Abstract
THE MULTIPLICITY OF DEMANDS PLACED UPON THE WARDEN'S JOB ARE DESCRIBED. THE FUNCTIONING OF THE WARDEN UNDER CONDITIONS DEEMED INADEQUATE AND INEFFECTIVE IS PORTRAYED. THE ARTICLE ENCOURAGES A FRANK ACCEPTANCE OF THE DISCOURAGEMENT AND SENSE OF FUTILITY OFTEN ENGENDERED BY THE WORK OF THE WARDEN ALONG WITH COMMITMENT TO A PRINCIPLE OF AMBIGUOUS PROGRESS AND REFORM WITHOUT WHICH SOCIETY WOULD BE EVEN MORE INHUMANE THAN PRESENTLY EXPERIENCED.
