DISCUSSION AND INTERPRETATION OF THE RESPONSE OF 1000 SWEDISH PEOPLE, AGED 15 TO 70, IN A SURVEY OF POLICE AND POLICE PERFORMANCE.
Abstract
THE SWEDISH PUBLIC INDICATED A HIGH OPINION OF THE POLICE - EIGHTY PER CENT BELIEVED THAT IT WAS VERY OR RATHER UNUSUAL FOR THE POLICE TO GO BEYOND THEIR POWERS AND 51 PER CENT CONSIDERED THE POLICE IMAGE DEPICTED BY THE EVENING PAPERS AS MISLEADING AND TOO NEGATIVE. EIGHTY PER CENT OF THOSE INTERVIEWED WISHED TO HAVE MORE POLICE FOOT PATROLS AND THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE DESIRABLE FOR THE POLICE TO GIVE MORE INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC ON SELF-DEFENSE AGAINST CRIME. THE MOST COMMON OPINION WAS THAT THE PUBLIC IS INSUFFICIENTLY INFORMED ABOUT THE POLICE. THE GROUPS DEVIATING MOST FROM THE AVERAGE RESULTS CONCERNING ATTITUDES ABOUT THE POLICE WERE YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 15-24 AND PEOPLE IN BIG CITIES.
