This article describes the weapons prevention program of the Bibb County Board of Education Campus Police Department in Macon, Georgia.
Abstract
The Bibb County program has reduced weapons violations on school grounds by more than 72 percent. The program consists of five steps: (1) Assessment--to determine the extent of the weapons problem; (2) Information-- to ensure that officers, educators, students, parents, and the public understand the weapons policy, preventive measures and the consequences of policy violation; (3) Weapons screening--via frequent, surprise, random searches by officers under the direction (and therefore the legal authority) of the principal; (4) Consistent enforcement--based on a written policy of arrest and removal from the school by expulsion or assignment to an alternative campus of felony weapons violators; and (5) Continual evaluation--through systematic, regular program reviews. The article includes detailed descriptions of each of the steps.
