This training manual, developed by the National Institute for Citizen Education in the Law and the National Crime Prevention Council, covers the expanded use of mediation skills in conflict management and includes lesson plans.
Abstract
Community mediation programs have been initiated across the United States to explore new forms of dispute resolution. The mediation process can be both positive and educational, since mediation is changing the way people think about conflict management. The training manual presents a mock mediation to help students develop better problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Training materials incorporated in the manual are designed to teach mediation skills and processes. The first three lessons present the basic skills of mediation and conflict management, while the final five lessons focus on steps in the mediation process and on the preapration of disputants and mediators. The last section of the manual contains 17 scenarios for use in learning and practicing the mediation process.
