This article describes recycling programs in correctional institutions around the country.
Abstract
Recycling/reuse programs are necessities in correctional systems that routinely operate on tight budgets. The article describes a handful of such programs in operation in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, and New York. The Minnesota DOC has partnered with MINNCOR industries to recycle and refurbish wood pallets and corrugated panel protectors. MINNCOR sends the wood pallets to inmates, who repair and refurbish them and then send them back to the customer. Minnesota DOC also collaborated on a program called the Minnesota Computers For Schools. Computers are donated by businesses, upgraded by the program, and are given to schools throughout the State. In Pennsylvania, a program known as the Electronic Recycling Program, engages inmates in the recycling of scrap computer and electronic equipment to help the environment. In Utah, different types of electronics are de-manufactured by Utah DOC facilities and re-used in new products, which helps extend the life of landfills in the area. All of New York State’s 70 DOC facilities have a central recycling program that sorts, processes, and bales the materials for market. The article also describes tire recycling programs that may be used in DOC facilities.
