Washington State has participated in the Drug Control and System Improvement Program funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance since 1987; the program distributes funds to law enforcement, criminal justice, and nonprofit organizations at State and local levels to reduce the illegal supply of and demand for drugs.
Abstract
Using information extracted from program records and produced by economic modeling software, it is estimated that the program generated over $102 million in direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts between 1987 and 1992. Given an investment of $30.7 million in Federal funds and $16.3 million in State and local funds during the 6-year period, every dollar placed directly into the program generated another dollar in subsequent activity. Over 1,550 years of employment were directly or indirectly generated by the $47 million in Federal, State, and local funds. 3 tables
