The frequency and distribution of crime within Washington State and neighboring States are presented for 1973-1977.
Abstract
The introductory section provides an historical overview of crime in Washington State by providing data on crime rates per 100,000 population for 1958 to 1977. For both the violent crimes and property crimes, reported crime rates have risen over this 19-year period. For violent crimes, Washington State has closely mirrored the increase in reported crimes for the Nation, yet the State's rate has remained consistently lower than the national level. For reported property crimes, the Washington State rate has usually been higher than the national rate. The section on reported crime presents the number of reported crimes in the State from three perspectives. First, the reported crime numbers and rates are compared for 1974-1977 for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, other cities, and rural areas. Second, the State change in crime rates for 1973-1977 is compared to U.S. averages, the Pacific States averages, and the neighboring States of Idaho and Oregon. Third, the section shows the reported crime profile of the cities and counties which participate in the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Reporting Program. The section on arrests provides general arrest information; comparison data for 1973-1977 on arrest trends; arrests by age, race, and sex for 1977; and arrests for cities and counties for 1976 and 1977. Crime definitions are appended.
