THIS EVALUATION FOCUSES ON THE PROVISION OF POLICE SERVICES TO A SLUM-TYPE HOUSING PROJECT WITH A SIGNIFICANT SPANISH-SPEAKING PUERTO RICAN MINORITY.
Abstract
MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE EVALUATION IS CONCERNED WITH THE REFUNDING OF A SPECIAL POLICE SUBSTATION IN THIS HOUSING PROJECT AND WITH THE ADDITION OF TWO MORE SPANISH SPEAKING POLICEMEN TO ITS COMPLEMENT OF TWO SPANISH SPEAKING AND FOUR ENGLISH SPEAKING POLICEMEN. THE EVALUATION WAS CARRIED OUT BY HAVING THE EVALUATOR GO INTO THE AREA, TALK TO PEOPLE AND HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS, AND OBTAIN THEIR IMPRESSIONS OF THESE INTERACTIONS. AFTER THE INTERVIEWS WERE COMPLETED, THE EVALUATOR CONCLUDED THAT THE PROJECT HAD RESULTED IN A LESSENING OF TENSIONS BETWEEN THE WARMINSTER HEIGHTS CITIZENRY AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS.
