FOCUSING ON THE PROGRAMS OF THE TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS, A JAMESBURG, N.J. RESIDENTIAL FACILITY FOR DELINQUENT YOUTH, THIS REPORT PROVIDES FRESH IDEAS FOR VOLUNTEERS IN JUVENILE TRAINING SCHOOLS AND DETENTION CENTERS.
Abstract
SERVICES ARE PROVIDED AT THE TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, EDUCATION, COTTAGE LIFE, SPECIAL PROJECTS, CLUBS, RECREATION, AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES. IN THESE AREAS A VOLUNTEER CAN BECOME INVOLVED IN BEFRIENDING A BOY BY TAKING HIM OFF-CAMPUS FOR SPECIAL ACTIVITIES OR TUTORING HIM IN A VARIETY OF SUBJECTS. GROUPS MAY BECOME INVOLVED IN VISTS TO THE COTTAGES TO SUPERVISE AND PARTICIPATE IN VARIOUS SPORTS, ARTS AND CRAFTS, OR OTHER SPECIAL PROJECTS. SIMILARLY, VOLUNTEERS CAN DONATE THEIR TIME AND EXPERTISE TO VARIOUS CLUBS ESTABLISHED AT THE DETENTION CENTER. A VOLUNTEER WITH A BACKGROUND IN HORTICULTURE, FOR EXAMPLE, MAY FIND THE BOTANY CLUB TO BE A PARTICULAR AREA OF INTEREST. FINALLY, PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS ARE GIVEN, INCLUDING A LIST OF MONTHLY ACTIVITIES SUCH AS MAKING KITES AND DECORATING EASTER EGGS IN MARCH, TAKING A TRIP TO THE CIRCUS IN JUNE, MAKING HAND PUPPETS IN SEPTEMBER, AND PREPARING A THANKSGIVING DINNER IN NOVEMBER. DESCRIPTIONS ARE INCLUDED OF HOW TO MAKE SUCH ITEMS AS PAPER BAG TURKEYS, CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATIONS, MILK CARTON SAILBOATS, AND SEED MOSAICS. RECIPES FOR STAINED GLASS COOKIES, GINGERBREAD SCULPTURE, AND OTHER BAKED GOODS ARE NOTED. (WJR)
