This handbook for Canadian corrections volunteers describes the values, roles, and functions of corrections volunteers and provides regulations and advice.
Abstract
Existing volunteer services include helping inmates plan for release, assisting inmate families, and helping inform the community about corrections. The Correctional Service of Canada actively solicits volunteer involvement, preserves the independence of volunteers, and provides the conditions and opportunities that nurture the development of volunteer services. Volunteers must familiarize themselves with the rules of the institution or agency with which they work and fulfill the commitment made to that institution or agency. Volunteer relationships with offenders are facilitated by being nonjudgmental, accepting, noncontrolling, objective, and reliable. Glossary and a French version.
