Abstract
THE WINDHAM SCHOOL DISTRICT WAS ESTABLISHED TO SERVE THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF ALL PERSONS INCARCERATED IN THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS WHO ARE NOT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES. CLASSES ARE CONDUCTED AT 13 OF THE 14 UNITS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. COURSES ARE OFFERED IN AGRICULTURE, HOMEMAKING, OFFICE SKILLS, AND INDUSTRIAL SKILLS. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO ESTABLISH A SYSTEM WHEREBY CONTINUOUS FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION ON GRADUATES OF THE WINDHAM VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT WOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR EVALUATIVE PURPOSES. METHODS TO IMPROVE THE RECORD KEEPING ACTIVITIES AND THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF FOLLOW-UP INSTRUMENTS ARE DESCRIBED. FOUR HUNDRED AND SIX RESPONDING SUBJECTS WERE USED IN THE STUDY. DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES, DIFFERENCES IN RESPONDING GROUPS, AND SUCCESS OF VARIOUS GROUPS IN OBTAINING TRAINING-RELATED EMPLOYMENT ARE REPORTED. THE APPENDIXES INCLUDE FORMS USED, RELATED CORRESPONDENCE, AND QUESTIONNAIRES UTILIZED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
